Let me start off by saying that I am not a health care professional. I am a person who has experience with health and I want to share that knowledge. You should always seek professional medical guidance from someone in the health field industry based on your individual needs. However, I am going to show you how to find that person.
Headaches are the worst. I was going to start off by telling my story but I am going to write a book. I feel my whole story should be organized and not me trying to give you a bunch of information in a blog post that you may not read in its entirety.
I am going to say before you start taking medication for your headaches, find a doctor who will determine why you are having headaches. I have been to tons of doctors and on a lot of medication. I struggled with headaches for 15 years! Until I met a doctor who wanted to search for the root problem of my headaches.
Here is my advice to you:
- Look for a doctor:
Find a functional doctor, not a conventional one. Functional doctors look for the root cause of the problem. Conventional doctors typically prescribe medication to cover up the problem.
Search the web for reviews and see if this is a person worth going to. My doctor is a functional internist that won best of her town for 2018 based on client reviews. I live in a big city so this means a lot of her patients think highly of her. My doctor also had a lot of positive feedback and that is why I chose her and I am glad I did.
- Think about the cost of care:
When you found a doctor make sure they are looking out for you. Medical care can be expensive and finding the root cause can include other medical tests. My doctor is very aware of prices and has negotiated rates with testing labs and has built relationships so she knows the cost of procedures. The last thing you want to do is make your self broke over advocating to be the healthiest you possible.
- Take care of yourself:
Finding the root cause will take time. If you are having a bad day, take off work if you can. If you cannot, take as many breaks as you can. Also, think about your work environment – Can you make it more cheery? I brought in pictures of my dogs to help me through the tough times.
Nobody ever said it was going to be easy but trust me it will be worth it. In the end, the doctor discovered my posture was causing my headaches by taking a simple x-ray of my neck. It has taken me three months of physical therapy but I rarely have a headache. If I do, it is my fault from not following doctor orders. I have exercises I do throughout the day for my neck that have helped me regain my life.
